Shen is a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, where he also serves as a faculty member for the graduate program in Neuroscience and runs the Shen Neurolaw Lab. 

Shen describes himself as a nontraditional candidate, framing the race as being between “five litigators and one innovator”. The Minnesota Daily talked to Shen at his campaign headquarters on 4th Street SE in Dinkytown to learn more about his plans to reshape the public office.
